ayurveda – ay-you-what?

a friend of mine is studying the practice of ayurveda.  (BTW it takes me a million times to try and pronounce and even then i only get it right 50% of the time.  it’s annoying!)  but, that being said, she’s studying it and knew i liked interesting things that have to do with your body, soul and mind and when it’s combined with health and wellness – well i’m all ears!

we started talking and she asked if i wanted to be a client of hers, and i quickly said, absolutely! and so it began… i’ll do a blog about the intake in another post because now – i want to get down to how my first 3 days of my ayurvedic mono-diet went.  the good, the bad and the ugly!

first though – what is a mono-diet?  this is to help cleanse my system – for me, i am a strong pita (PIT-a) that has a vata (VA-ta) imbalance – and while i don’t know exactly what that means, the way it feels for me is that stress DRAINS me.  kicks me in the butt, knocks me down and i’m out of it for days, weeks and while i hate to admit this, months.  when i was younger, i’d have a bad day, shake it off and be ready to tackle the next with gusto – these days, not so much.

so the mono-diet is to help get my digestive system right and my vata back on track to help me be a better bouncer – are you following?!

for me the mono diet looks like this:

3 Day Mono Diet

Breakfast: Kitchari (recipe below)

Lunch: Kitchari

4pm Vata Time: Honey with Ginger

Dinner: Kitchari

you can see – it’s a ton of the SAME THING EVERYDAY!  the one thing about kitchari is that you can make it different each time.  and as many of you know, it’s just me so making 1 dish of something lasts me quite a while!!

however, this is what i will say about each day…

Day 1 – typical day – nothing really special, just getting into the grove of things

Day 2 – HORRIBLE cravings – at first for sweet but then for ANYTHING OTHER THAN KITCHARI!

Day 3 – i woke up miserable – bad nights sleep and literally just didn’t FEEL good.  BUT.. around 12-1pm that day, something clicked and all of a sudden i felt FANTASTIC!   better than fantastic – I felt like my old self – and i do owe a blog post on feeling off…

there is A LOT more about ayurveda for sure and i’m just touching the tip of the iceberg here without a doubt.  and for those of you who are wondering if i’ll be eating soups for the rest of my life, the answer is no.  but this winter, when it’s cold and dry out, i will be adding warm and wet foods to my diet.  what does my eating look like now you ask:

Going Forward:

Breakfast: cream of wheat or oatmeal with dates, nuts and cinnamon

Lunch: soup of some sort

4pm Vata Hour: 2-3 dates and black tea with milk

Dinner: soup of some sort

one of the most popular questions i get asked is does it have to be vegetarian?  the answer is no – so while the first week that’s what i primarily stuck with, it is not going to be what i do moving forward. in fact, today i made Potato and Leek Soup and its base is chicken broth.  it’s what is most easy for to digest, so a chunky beef stew might not be the answer since it’s just too heavy in nature.

click HERE for the recipe for my Kitchari this week and HERE for my Sweet Potato Soup as well – both were amazing! and both i did in a crock pot to keep it simple! as the week goes by, i’ll post the two soups of this week as well!  and continue to provide updates on this ayurvedic journey i’m taking!!!
